What is the difference in the features of african americans and black from the caribbean?

I’m african american, but recently (within the last 6-7 years) people have been asking me if I’m from the caribbean or from Africa. I’m about the color of Gabrielle Union and there’s nothing special about my hair (i get a perm like every other black woman). My mom thinks it’s because of my facial features, but I don’t see a difference in the features of american blacks and blacks from other countries!
I know that African Americans are people who are from africa, but black doesn’t fully describe who I am either…you can be black and be cuban, canadian, jamaican, etc. So to specify, I use the term African-American (excuse me for having pride in being American!.). I know every black woman doesn’t get perms…I USED to be natural myself…that’s why I said “like every other black woman”…I just wanted to know if there’s any special look or way that sets me apart from my friends and family, since they’ve never been asked that question before!!
