Were there really pirates in the Caribbean?

I live in the Caribbean and nothing too crazy happened here with pirates. I know there was this famous one called Pirate Cofresi in the island Puerto Rico where I live, and I think there was two more. But really, their adventures were so “great” that I don’t even remember what they really did. In History class I learn little information about them, I know they used to come over here and they had fights and steal from other people and then sail away, but nothing more.
