Days 2 3

Open Question: What do i need to do concerning my visa to the USA?
Im moving to the USA in july for a uni exchange program, however my student visa only lasts 30 day before and after the start of session. As I wanted to travel more longer than this I need to apply for a visa waiver (Im from Australia so am eligible), leave the country then come back in on my student visa.
My plan was to drive into Canada for a few days then fly to my Uni in North Carolina on my student visa.
The questions I have are:
- do I need to have an exit flight booked in order to enter on a tourist visa (or visa waiver program) or will driving into Canada be sufficient?
- If no to the above will having accomodation booked in Canada be sufficient?
- Can I just drive over the boarder to activate my student visa or am I required to fly?
- Any other advice would be great!
I know I can download the visa waiver info guide off the website and talk to the consulate but that costs money and at this stage Im just looking for advice so I can plan my trip.
Much Appreciated
